What does PL 5 mean? Preparedness Levels explained
The national fire system’s 1-to-5 scale for how committed the country’s firefighting resources are. PL 5 is the top.
The National Multi-Agency Coordinating group at NIFC sets the Preparedness Level daily during fire season. PL 1 is quiet. PL 5 means most of the country’s firefighting resources are already committed to incidents, and new fires compete for whatever is left.
The level moves with national fire activity, not any single fire. It is the fastest single read on how stretched the system is.
For contractors
At PL 4 and PL 5, agency-owned resources run out and orders reach deeper into the contract pool, faster. If you hold agreements, a rising PL is your season accelerating. Expect competition for crews and equipment to be tight, and expect the phone to ring at inconvenient hours.
